The Grand Contest for STeampunk at Herofest LARP

The Grand Steampunk Contest at Herofest LARP History

The High Martian Council believes that cooperation and collaboration need to be combined with the energy of market forces and competition if the people of the Martian colonies are to survive and thrive. In order that the scarce resources of Mars can be shared between the factions without large scale bloodshed they have devised a mechanism by which the factions can compete to gain a share of these resources and this is called the Grand Contest.

High Council Companies

There are seven working mines of significance on Mars, named after signs of the Zodiac. These are controlled and operated by the High Martian Council via ‘Companies’ established to run these independently of the factions. In addition there are a further five Companies that provide ancillary services, also named after signs of the Zodiac, each of these is controlled directly by the Martian High Council (i.e. there are no Seats on the Board) but they may be influenced through the Grand Contest.

The Companies which do not run mines are:

Each Company has Board of Directors who’s Seats are open to Faction members and the production of these mines goes to whichever Faction controls the relevant Board. In addition there are other gains which can be extracted from all these companies and this is allocated via a series of votes over seven rounds.

Rules

Rounds

The game is played over seven rounds. Each round has four phases. All players act simultaneously on each phase - there are no “turns”. The phases are:

1. Bidding

Voting Tokens

There are three types of tokens. Each type of token represents a different sort of “persuasion” that can be used influence the Company. From strongest to weakest, the tokens are:

Power Privilege Vote

Each Faction starts the game with no Power, no Privilege, and Votes equal to your Faction size plus four.

Example: the Zollern Korporation has eight people attending the event so they start with no Power, no Privilege and (8+4) 12 votes.)

During the Bidding phase, each player places his/her individual vote in the voting box representing the Company they wish to try and influence. These can be found in the Tavern. The faction also allocates all Power, Privilege and/or Extra Votes they have as they see fit across their faction. You must use all your votes each turn (i.e. you cannot ‘save’ them up for later use).

Not every token can be used to vote on every Company, for example Aries is immune to Power. The Bid Card (issued to each faction and available in the tavern) shows what kind of persuasion will work on each Company. Power cannot be played on a Company with a Red background, and Privilege cannot be played on a Company with a Black background.

THE BIDDING ROUNDS WILL CLOSE ON:
Friday 8pm
  11pm
Saturday 11am
  2pm
  5pm
  8pm
  11pm

NOTE: Strictly no votes will be accepted after the bidding round has closed

2. Resolution

The Adjudicator (appointed by the High Council) will then count the votes for the various Companies.

Power trumps everything. One Power will beat any amount of Privilege or Votes. Privilege is the second strongest token. One Privilege will beat any amount of Votes. Votes only win if no Power or Privilege are present. Highest numbers of the dominant type present win.

The second highest comes second and everyone else merely qualifies for a general Dividend if applicable to this Company.

If no one bids on a Company, no one gets that Company’s benefits for that round.

Resolving Ties

If the highest votes in a bid are the same kind, look at their numbers. Two Power beat one Power, three Power beat two, and so on.

If the highest votes in a bid are the same kind and the same amount, look at the lesser tokens. For instance, a Power and a Privilege beats a Power. A Privilege and three Votes beat a Privilege and two Votes, and so on.

If the highest bids are exactly tied in all aspects, no one wins (i.e. no-one comes first or second) though Dividends will see still be issued - see Production.

Illegal Votes

A player might place a vote for a Company which is immune to that form of persuasion. Illegal tokens are ignored, but there is no further penalty. If your faction’s remaining tokens make the strongest vote, your faction will still win.

3. Gains

Winning (or coming second) in a Vote (see Resolution) provides you with different kinds of benefit (Gain) from each Company (see list below). There is also a much smaller benefit to be gained from all Votes cast – this is called the Dividend. Examples include Aries where you gain one Silver for each three votes cast whatever position in the resolution you hold, however Capricorn and Aquarius do not provide a Dividend or indeed second place, so its all or nothing for them.

After Resolution the Adjudicator will give each faction leader the gains from the last round including the appropriate Votes of varying types for the next round.

Types of Gain:

Trade Tokens

These can be exchanged on a one-to-one basis (via the Bank in the Tavern) for Blue, Crystal, Gold or Silver. Note these MUST be exchanged within that round (i.e. you have about 3 hours to do it then the token becomes worthless).

Power and Privilege and additional votes

If the Company grants additional Votes the Adjudicator will provide the faction leader with additional voting tokens for use on the next vote (along with votes equal to your faction size + four).

If the Company grants Power or Privilege the Adjudicator will mark the appropriate number of your vote share with suitable marks (i.e. Power and Privilege votes are not extra votes but are boosted normal votes and do not add to your overall number of votes).

Note all votes must be used the next opportunity or they become worthless – they cannot be ‘saved up’.

Seats on the Board

If the Company Gain grants a Seat on the Board, one of your factions voting tokens will be placed in the specified area of the Influence map (see Ending the Game).

If all the Seats on the Board of that particular Company are already full, though, no faction voting token will be placed on the Influence map.

The benefits provided by Capricorn and Aquarius affect faction voting tokens already on the influence map (see Espionage).

A share of the Dividend

As well gains for 1st and 2nd place most companies provide a Dividend. This is a small amount of Ore according to the number of total votes cast by each faction with that company. This varies per company and is shown on the table below.

4. Espionage

Capricorn and Aquarius

Capricorn and Aquarius can be the two most powerful Companies, if used correctly. They are the only way to change the owners of Board Seats on the influence map, or shift the balance of power in an area once the spaces are full.

Winning Capricorn will allow you to take a Seat on the Board away from another faction. Capricorn is also the only way to reduce the total number of Seats on the Board a faction has.

The more influence spaces are filled, the stronger Aquarius becomes. In the early rounds, there may not seem to be much point in switching Seats on the Board, but late in the game, you can help your faction and hurt your rivals with a carefully planned exchange. Remember, you don’t have to move your own Board Seats with the Aquarius.

Posting of Results

At the end of each round, the results (including the number and nature of all votes cast) will be posted on the Results board in the Tavern for all to see. Knowing what your opponents have done may help you plan your own strategy.

After the Espionage phase, a new round begins.

5. Ending the Game

The game is over after the seven rounds of votes (the last round finishes 11pm Saturday night).

Any Power or Privilege earned in the very last voting round will be converted into Trade tokens. Each Power grants five Trade tokens, each Privilege grants three Trade tokens.

If at the end of an Event (i.e. end of the weekend) your faction has the most Seats on the Board of one of the Mining Companies (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra) then your faction gains the Production output from that Mine (see table below) at the start of the next event. It is not necessary to have a majority of its spaces - just the most. If a Board is tied, no one gains its Mine’s Production and it is returned to the Martian High Council.

Example A: Leo has seven Seats on its Board. The Tripartite Scholars and the Al-Azhar Alliance each have two Seats, but the Grackle-backs have three. The Grackle-backs win the Production (35 Blue ore).

Example B: The New Dakota Territory and the Foreign Legion each have three Seats on Leo, and the Zollern Korporation has one. The Board is tied and no one gets its Production.
